Balloon sinus dilation: A minimally invasive office procedure that reopens the sinus pathways and restores drainage to deliver immediate and lasting relief to recurrent and chronic sinusitis sufferers.1

Barosinusitis: Sinus troubles, particularly with pain, due to changing atmospheric pressures, as when going up or down in a plane. Also called aerosinusitis or sinus barotrauma.

BSD: Acronym for balloon sinus dilation.

ENT doctor: Acronym for ear, nose and throat doctor, also known as an otolaryngologist.

Ethmoid sinus: The ethmoidal sinuses or ethmoidal air cells of the ethmoid bone are two of the four paired paranasal sinuses.

FESS: Acronym for functional endoscopic sinus surgery.

Frontal sinus: Pockets of space located above the orbit of each eye in the frontal bone. They are lined with mucus membrane.

Functional endoscopic sinus surgery: A surgical procedure used by ear, nose and throat surgeons in some chronic sinusitis patients to improve sinus drainage by enlarging the drainage pathways.

Maxillary sinus: The largest of the four paranasal sinuses. The two maxillary sinuses are located below the cheeks, above the teeth and on the sides of the nose, and are lined with mucus membrane.

Rhinosinusitis: An inflammation of the tissue lining the sinuses that afflicts more than 29 million people each year. Also known as sinusitis.

Sinusitis: An inflammation of the tissue lining the sinuses that afflicts more than 29 million people each year. Also known as rhinosinusitis.

Sinus headache: Headaches that may accompany sinusitis, a condition in which the membranes lining your sinuses become swollen and inflamed.

Sphenoid sinus: Sinuses located just behind the skull base, above the nasopharynx and just below the pituitary gland.
